These were
exciting times for me, talking to other breeders, learning about the breed,
and Georgia Palmer was an excellent mentor for me. She taught me the importance
of testing for Hip Dysplasia, Kidney problems, etc. and was very particular
about her own dogs. She gave me a gold sable girl named Ruffway Khambu,
and I was to split the litter with her, and she furnished the stud service.
She decided to use Ch. Karma Frosty Knight O'Everglo, a beautiful black
pigmented white dog with the most perfect coat and texture ... Gloria shipped
him out to Georgia, as she wanted to sell him. Gloria had acquired Frosty
from Dorothy Cohen at a minimal cost because Dorothy thought he was a "smooth"
and would never have coat. Gloria had a wonderful eye for a dog, and knew
quality when she saw it.
Georgia brought
Frosty to me to keep and breed to Khambu, and then she would take him back.
Looking back, I just didn't realize what a wonderful dog this was at the
time, but I know now that he was one of the most beautiful Lhasas I ever
had my hands on! He had a classic head and expression, lovely balance and
movement and wonderful attitude and temperament. Marie Aspuru from Florida
bought him, and although he wasn't used much, his offspring were outstanding.
Marie didn't allow him to be used by outside breeders, but he was a great
showdog and producer.
Crossed into
the Sparky line through Khambu, he made a major contribution to my bloodlines
through Ch. Orlane's Chitra. This litter was my first, and what a first
it was! 10 puppies ... I couldn't believe my eyes! 5 goldens, 1 black-brindle,
and 4 golden sables ... all fat and healthy, shiny little squirmy babies
that just ate, and ate and ate ... Even Georgia was surprised, and I can't
imagine what poor little Khambu thought! The pups thrived, and when Georgia
came to split the litter, they were delightful happy babies, running everywhere.
Georgia pointed
out to me the four definite "smooths", Lhasas destined to never
grow the long, glamorous coats but wonderful as pets ... and the one that
might or might not be smooth, and then we divided the litter. She took
a glamorous gold bitch puppy which she finished easily. I took the pretty
black brindle, who became Ch. Orlane's Chitra of Ruffway, dam of 7 champions
by Sparky. Next Georgia took a gold male that went to Milbryan Kennels,
and Mildred Bryant in Texas, Ch. Ruffway Chogul. I took a gold male, but
he was sold early as a pet. Chitra was wonderful, and as a foundation bitch,
more than I could ever have hoped for ... her puppies went on to become
wonderful champions and producers in their own right. Chs. Orlane's Dulmo,
Orlane's Dieh Bieh, Orlane's Senpo Arog, and more.
