CH. ORLANE'S EARLY BIRD

     Our beautiful Birdy ... what a girl! She is pictured here going Best of Breed at the first Professional Hanlder's Match in New Jersey, judge Mrs. Annette Lurton, at just 10 months of age. A wonderfully happy showdog, Birdy loved everyone she ever met ... and instilled this great temperament into her children. Birdy was the object of much criticism from the "Hamilton" contingent, they felt she was much too stylish and short in body; but we thought her exaggeration was what we needed to offset some of the longer, lower dogs we were getting.
     Pat Keen saw her at this age, and wanted to lease her for a choice of litter puppy, bred to one of her dogs ... and agreed to finish her while waiting to breed her. Birdie finished for the title very quickly, and was bred to Midge Hylton's male, Ch. Nikai of Kyu Ru - Hamilton bred.
     I couldn't wait to see the puppies, but disappointed at them and their Mother's condition when I saw them. Poor Birdie, she was a bag o'bones, and of the six puppies, only one seemed in good health. Pat took the one healthy looking pup as her choice, a female - who was to become her top producer Ch. Hylan Shotru Snowbird. I took the remaining female who was very tiny, with a funny coat ... and the remaining four males were sold into pet homes without AKC registrations. My little girl was brought home to Delaware, where we lavished loving care on her, and she responded to therapy and began gaining weight ... she was later to become Eng. and Am. Ch. Luck Be A Lady. Birdy also began to respond to treatment, and put on weight ... but she was never to be quite the same happy little girl that had left us so many months ago. She was bred once more to Ch. Orlane's Incorrigible, a Rotten son, and produced our Ch. Orlane O.J. - and he has been one of our better producers as well.
